The deadline is just around the corner, on 5<sup>th<\/sup> April 2023.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Temporary Window<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordinarily, we can fill in gaps on our national insurance record up to a maximum of 6 years after the gap occurred. After these 6 years have elapsed you cannot make any changes and it instead becomes a permanent gap on your national insurance record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least, that was the case. However, we have now been granted a temporary window wherein we can fill in gaps dating back an additional 10 years. Where before, for the tax year 2022-23, the oldest year we could fill in gaps for was 2016-17, we are now allowed to fill gaps dating back to 2006-07 for a limited period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This temporary window is only applied to those who fall under the new state pension system, i.e, those reaching state pension age after 5<sup>th<\/sup> April 2016.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximising your State Pension<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually need a minimum of 10 qualifying years on your national insurance record to claim the state pension. A qualifying year is when you were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working and paying national insurance<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting national insurance credits, e.g, if you were unemployed, sick, a carer or a parent<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You were paying voluntary national insurance contributions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To qualify for the maximum amount of state pension, you need 35 years of qualifying national insurance contributions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-959\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-800x474.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-800x474.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-600x355.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-1536x910.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.redstareducation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-kampus-production-7551621-scaled-e1677078588869-2048x1213.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflation-Linked Savings<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember here that the state pension is triple locked, meaning it is linked to match the highest figure out of 3 separate measures of inflation:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average earnings<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumer Prices Index<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5%<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, filling these gaps on your national insurance record enables you to make the most of an inflation-linked retirement income. This window is offering a great opportunity and is certainly worth looking into, because once the deadline is up, you\u2019re back to only being able to fill in gaps dating back 6 years.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checking your State Pension and National Insurance Record<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can check your national insurance record by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-national-insurance-record\">clicking here<\/a>.\u00a0This will allow you to see if there are any gaps and the amount required to fill these in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also check your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-state-pension\">state pension forecast<\/a> if you want to find out how much state pension you\u2019re eligible to claim, and when you can start receiving payments.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, the deadline to fill these gaps on your national insurance record to help maximise your state pension is 5<sup>th<\/sup> April 2023, so get moving!<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has introduced a temporary window where you can fill gaps on your national insurance record dating back 16 years, rather than the usual 6.
